Gary is a public affairs consultant with a particular interest in natural resource issues. In 1990, Gary co-founded The Gallatin Group, a regional public affairs consulting firm, serving as president from 1993 through 2005 and chairman until his departure in 2007 to form Gary Smith Company, a Seattle-based international public affairs and strategic communications consulting firm. He was instrumental in launching the Hatchery Reform project for Puget Sound and Coastal Washington, and helped advise the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife 21st Century Salmon and Steelhead Project. In 2007, Gary was appointed to serve as one of three representatives of the United States on the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission. He also serves on the board of the Seattle Aquarium. Gary has chaired numerous statewide political campaigns and has extensive experience in the private sector as well as in local, state, and federal government.
